Electrofusion welding

Electrofusion is used to weld PE pipes, fittings and valves, and allows a secure connection and the systematic, economical and efficient installation of PE pipe systems. Weld quality depends to a considerable degree on the care taken over the preparation work. Electrofusion jointing should only be carried out by trained personnel.

Electrofusion welding creates a joint in the material at molecular level which is not reversible. Electrofusion joints are permanent.

Electrofusion welding of HDPE pipes and fittings requires fittings manufactured specifically for the purpose. Electrofusion fittings contain an internal resistance through which an electric current passes, locally heating the material and fusing the fitting to the pipe. Electrofusion welding requires special welding units that can read the data from the fitting and apply current at the intensity and duration specified by the manufacturer in order to make the weld.

Specialist and certified personnel are also required, because in Romania work of this kind falls under ISCIR regulation. Electrofusion requires a dry, clean working environment with an ambient temperature above 0°C.

In terms of quality, electrofusion is the best weld possible. It is also suitable for small-diameter pipe. Economically, electrofusion has high costs, but taking into account its higher productivity compared with butt fusion it remains viable up to roughly 160 mm diameter. The main use of electrofusion welding for HDPE pipes and fittings is of course where space or position does not allow a butt fusion weld, or where a repair to an existing installation is needed. It is very important to note that electrofusion fittings are the only accepted way of joining pipes with different wall thicknesses.

Butt fusion welding

The joining surfaces of the pipes and fittings are heated to welding temperature and joined under mechanical pressure, with no additional material, producing a homogeneous joint.

Butt fusion jointing must be carried out with equipment on which the jointing pressure can be adjusted. Equipment used for joining thermoplastic materials must comply with standard DVS 2208 Part 1. Butt fusion jointing should only be carried out by trained personnel.

Butt fusion is the recommended option for installations using large-diameter pipe, mainly because of its lower execution cost. It requires no additional fittings at all for welding HDPE pipe. By contrast, welding time is directly proportional to pipe diameter and wall thickness, so butt fusion has the lowest productivity of these processes.

PP-R/H butt fusion welding

For applications where the fluid carried is at high temperature, or where its chemical composition makes it incompatible with other materials, polypropylene solutions joined by butt fusion are used. These guarantee a homogeneous joint in the material and eliminate the risk of potentially harmful substances escaping from the installation, both for personnel and for the environment.
